National Body Calls ICC Decision “Unexpected” But Commits to Comprehensive Governance Overhaul
TORONTO – Cricket Canada has pledged full cooperation with the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the global governing body suspended its membership with immediate effect over what it described as serious breaches of membership obligations.
The suspension, announced during the ICC Board meeting in Ahmedabad, India, has sent shockwaves through Canadian cricket circles. However, Cricket Canada insists the organization had already begun implementing significant reforms and described the ICC’s decision as “unexpected.”
Despite the suspension, the ICC has confirmed that Canadian national representative teams will continue to participate in international competitions and ICC events while corrective measures are being implemented.
In a statement issued following the ICC announcement, Cricket Canada emphasized that it remains committed to restoring full compliance and rebuilding confidence in the administration of the sport.
“The suspension was unexpected, as the Jurist-Led Committee has already commenced its work and is scheduled to deliver interim recommendations within two weeks,” Cricket Canada stated.
“Nevertheless, Cricket Canada respects the ICC’s decision and is fully committed to meeting all compliance requirements.”
The organization revealed that it has already submitted a detailed Corrective and Preventative Action Plan (CAPA) to the ICC. The plan includes a comprehensive review of governance failures, financial oversight weaknesses and administrative shortcomings identified by the international governing body.
Among the key measures already underway are a full root cause analysis of governance and financial control failures, corrective actions targeting organizational oversight, enhanced reporting systems, strengthened financial controls and long-term reforms designed to ensure institutional stability.
A central element of the reform process is the creation of an independent Jurist-Led Committee chaired by Canadian lawyer and former national team athlete Dasha Peregoudova.
The committee has been granted unrestricted authority to examine financial records, interview personnel and recommend governance changes.
According to Cricket Canada, the committee will provide interim recommendations within 14 days, deliver a comprehensive investigative report within 45 days and present a full remediation plan shortly thereafter.
Additional reforms include the reactivation of the Finance and Audit Committee, preparation of a revised 2026 operating budget with enhanced disclosure requirements, accelerated audit procedures and mandatory governance training for directors and senior officials.
Cricket Canada’s leadership stressed that many of the concerns identified by the ICC relate to actions and systemic weaknesses inherited from previous administrations.
“The irregularities identified by the ICC stem from actions and systemic weaknesses under previous Boards and management,” the organization stated.
“The newly elected Board and current management team are fully committed to rectifying these issues and implementing comprehensive governance, financial control and administrative reforms at the earliest possible opportunity.”
While Cricket Canada’s membership remains suspended, the ICC has established a controlled funding mechanism that will allow approved national team programs to continue operating under direct oversight from ICC management.
The ICC will also provide Cricket Canada with specific reinstatement conditions, which will be monitored by an ICC Normalisation Committee. Full membership restoration will depend upon Cricket Canada’s successful implementation of the required reforms and the ICC Board’s satisfaction that all compliance issues have been adequately addressed.
The suspension comes at a time when cricket is experiencing significant growth in Canada, fuelled by increasing participation rates, a diverse cricket-loving population and the recent success of the Canadian national team on the international stage.
Cricket stakeholders across the country are hopeful that the governance reforms will ultimately strengthen the sport’s administration and provide a more stable foundation for future growth.
Despite the setback, Canadian players remain eligible to compete internationally, ensuring that the country’s cricket development pathway remains intact while organizational reforms move forward.
