OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney rallied Liberal MPs Friday ahead of Parliament’s return, promising an ambitious fall agenda focused on affordability, economic growth, major projects and protecting Canada’s sovereignty.
Carney acknowledged that some of his government’s economic measures will take time to deliver their full benefits, but said reducing costs for Canadians and strengthening the country’s economic independence remain priorities. His government has recently emphasized infrastructure investment, housing, domestic production and diversifying Canada’s international trade relationships.
A major part of the fall agenda will be legislation aimed at speeding up reviews of major projects. Carney said the proposed Building Canada Strong Act would seek a “one project, one review, one year” approach while maintaining environmental and regulatory standards.
The government is also preparing legislation dealing with artificial intelligence and social media, with Carney arguing stronger protections are needed for children facing online sexual abuse, cyberbullying and violent content.
Economic measures are expected to dominate the parliamentary session, along with the government’s fall budget. Carney said Ottawa intends to control government spending while protecting and potentially expanding key social programs. His government has also recently introduced measures designed to encourage new business investment in Canada.
The parliamentary return comes amid continuing Canada-U.S. trade tensions. Carney walked away from negotiations with Washington in August, saying the proposed agreement did not adequately protect Canadian interests. His government has since emphasized building domestic capacity and expanding trade relationships beyond the United States.
With MPs returning to the House of Commons, Carney described the upcoming sitting as crucial and said some of the government’s most significant economic legislation will be introduced in the months ahead.
