Residents planning to celebrate Canada Day at Chinguacousy Park this year can expect significantly enhanced security measures as the City of Brampton and Peel Regional Police move to prevent the type of disorder and fireworks-related incidents that disrupted previous celebrations.
City officials have announced a comprehensive security plan that will include controlled entry and exit points, mandatory bag inspections, increased police visibility, and enhanced crowd management measures designed to ensure a safe and family-friendly environment for thousands of attendees expected on July 1.
As part of the upgraded safety strategy, all visitors entering the park will be required to pass through designated security checkpoints where bags will be inspected. Peel Regional Police say the screening process is intended to prevent prohibited items from entering the event and to reduce the risk of dangerous behaviour during the festivities.
While attendees will still be permitted to bring food and non-alcoholic beverages into the park, alcohol and other prohibited items will not be allowed. Police and security personnel will be stationed throughout the venue to monitor activities and respond quickly to any incidents.
The enhanced security measures come in response to concerns arising from previous Canada Day celebrations, particularly incidents involving fireworks being ignited and thrown within crowded areas of the park. During last year’s festivities, videos circulating on social media showed fireworks being set off among large crowds as families attempted to leave the area. Witnesses reported scenes of confusion and panic as fireworks exploded near spectators, including families with young children and strollers.
The incidents prompted calls from residents and community leaders for stronger crowd-control measures and increased enforcement to ensure public safety during one of Brampton’s largest annual celebrations.
To address those concerns, the city has significantly increased its security budget for the event. More than $200,000 has been allocated toward safety and security measures, representing a substantial increase compared to previous years. The investment will support additional security staffing, controlled access points, fencing, crowd management infrastructure, and enhanced operational planning.
Peel Regional Police say officers will maintain a strong and visible presence throughout the event while utilizing intelligence-led policing strategies to monitor crowd behaviour and identify potential risks before incidents occur.
Officials emphasize that the objective is not only to improve security but also to preserve the welcoming and festive atmosphere that has traditionally made Canada Day at Chinguacousy Park one of the city’s most popular community events.
In addition to security preparations, residents are being encouraged to plan their travel in advance. Road closures, parking restrictions, and high traffic volumes are expected throughout the day. To ease congestion, shuttle bus services will operate from several locations, including Mount Pleasant GO Station, Trinity Common Mall, Sheridan College, and Gore Meadows Community Centre.
City officials are asking visitors to arrive early, cooperate with security screening procedures, and follow event guidelines to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone attending.
As Brampton prepares to celebrate Canada’s birthday, organizers hope the strengthened security measures will provide peace of mind for families and residents while allowing the community to come together safely to enjoy live entertainment, activities, and fireworks in a secure environment.
