Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a new round of sanctions against Russia, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to Ukraine as the war enters another challenging phase. The announcement came during Carney’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, where support for Ukraine remained a key topic of discussion among world leaders.
The latest sanctions are aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to sustain its military operations by targeting what Canada describes as critical components of the Russian war machine. The measures focus on Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which has been used to bypass international restrictions, along with energy revenue networks, defence-related industries, and organizations involved in spreading disinformation.
According to the federal government, the sanctions package will affect 162 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to Russia’s military and economic activities. Canadian officials believe these measures will further increase pressure on Moscow and limit its ability to finance and support ongoing military actions in Ukraine.
The announcement follows Canada’s continued efforts to stand alongside Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Last month, Carney pledged an additional $270 million in military assistance to help Ukraine strengthen its defence capabilities and secure critical equipment needed to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
That commitment was made during Carney’s participation in the European Political Community Summit in Armenia, where leaders from across Europe and partner nations gathered to discuss security, political cooperation, and regional stability. During the summit, Canada reiterated its support for international efforts aimed at maintaining peace, security, and democratic values.
By unveiling another round of sanctions at the G7 meeting, Carney signalled that Canada remains determined to work with its allies to increase economic and diplomatic pressure on Russia while continuing to provide assistance to Ukraine. The move reflects Canada’s ongoing position that Russia must be held accountable for its actions and that international support for Ukraine must remain strong until a lasting and just peace can be achieved.
As the conflict continues to shape global politics and security, Canada’s latest measures underscore its commitment to standing with Ukraine and supporting international efforts to counter Russian aggression.
