Rowena Santos Welcomes Completion of Brampton’s 50-Intersection Community Safety Camera Network as City Expands Crime-Fighting Technology

84 Per Cent of Residents Support Advanced Camera Technology to Assist Police Investigations and Enhance Community Safety

BRAMPTON – The City of Brampton has completed the installation of advanced community safety technology at 50 key intersections across the city, becoming the first municipality in Canada to fully deploy a network of 360-degree cameras combined with automated licence plate recognition technology to support public safety and assist law enforcement investigations.

The milestone marks another significant step in Brampton’s ongoing efforts to enhance community safety, combat organized crime, and provide Peel Regional Police with modern tools to better protect residents and neighbourhoods.

The newly completed system consists of 360-degree cameras and automated licence plate recognition technology strategically installed at 50 intersections throughout Brampton. Unlike red-light or speed enforcement cameras, these devices do not issue traffic tickets. Instead, they serve as a powerful investigative tool by providing critical video footage and vehicle information that can assist Peel Regional Police in solving crimes, locating suspects, identifying vehicles of interest, and supporting investigations involving serious incidents.

The City selected Canadian security technology leader Genetec Inc. to provide the video management and licence plate recognition technology, while Axis Communications, a globally recognized Swedish technology company, supplied the advanced 360-degree camera systems.

The initiative builds upon the successful pilot phase launched last year when the technology was installed at 19 intersections across Brampton. Since then, Peel Regional Police have utilized the system in more than 200 investigations, demonstrating its effectiveness in supporting frontline policing efforts and improving community safety outcomes.

Public support for the initiative has also been overwhelmingly positive. During a recent City telephone town hall, 84 per cent of participating residents expressed support for the use of intersection camera technology to assist police investigations and help make Brampton safer.

The camera network complements the City’s broader investments in road safety and crime prevention, including traffic calming measures, targeted enforcement programs, public education campaigns, and partnerships with Peel Regional Police aimed at reducing criminal activity and improving community well-being.

Mayor Patrick Brown emphasized that community safety remains one of Council’s highest priorities.

“Keeping residents safe continues to be our top priority. Working together with Peel Regional Police, we are leveraging technology and investing in community safety measures that help make Brampton the safest place to call home and the most inconvenient place in Canada for organized crime to operate. With these tools and partnerships in place, those looking to target our neighbourhoods will think twice knowing Brampton is taking a proactive, coordinated approach to protecting residents and supporting law enforcement,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said modern policing requires innovative tools that allow officers to respond effectively to evolving public safety challenges.

“Public safety today requires us to evolve just as quickly as the challenges facing our communities. These cameras provide timely access to critical information that supports our frontline officers, investigators and operational teams in responding more effectively to incidents. Through our continued partnership with the City of Brampton, we are strengthening our collective ability to enhance safety and support our community,” said Chief Nishan Duraiappah.

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, Wards 1 & 5, welcomed the completion of the project and highlighted the importance of investing in technology that supports safer communities.

“Residents want to feel safe in their homes, neighbourhoods and public spaces. These advanced community safety cameras provide valuable tools that support Peel Regional Police in solving crimes, identifying suspects and protecting families. The strong public support for this initiative demonstrates that residents recognize the importance of using innovative technology to enhance public safety while helping build stronger and more secure communities across Brampton,” said Rowena Santos, Regional Councillor, Wards 1 & 5.

As Brampton continues to grow as one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, investments in technology-driven safety solutions remain an important component of ensuring residents feel secure in their homes, businesses, and neighbourhoods.

The completion of the 50-intersection camera network reinforces Brampton’s position as a leader in adopting innovative public safety solutions and demonstrates the City’s commitment to working collaboratively with Peel Regional Police to create safer communities for all residents.
