A remarkable act of community generosity is set to unfold in Calgary this weekend, where thousands of residents will have the chance to receive free potatoes as part of a large-scale food giveaway.
Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Calgary announced it will distribute 80,000 pounds of potatoes on Saturday, April 25, at McKnight CTrain Station.
The giveaway is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will continue on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Organizers are asking anyone attending to bring their own bags to help speed up the process and make distribution more efficient.
The potatoes will be unwashed and handed out loose, making extra volunteers especially valuable.
To support the effort, the group is seeking around 30 volunteers to assist with sorting, loading, and helping visitors during the event.
Those interested can contact the organization through social media or simply arrive at the station at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the event.
The initiative reflects the spirit of seva — selfless service — often associated with Sikh community outreach and food support efforts.
At a time when many families are feeling pressure from rising grocery costs, the giveaway is expected to provide welcome relief while also strengthening community connections.
For many in Calgary, Saturday’s event will be more than a food distribution — it will be a powerful reminder of compassion in action.
