Brampton Man Charged After Seniors Allegedly Defrauded in Home Repair Scam

A Brampton man is facing multiple fraud-related charges after two seniors were allegedly targeted in a roof and home repair scam in Toronto.

According to Toronto Police Service, the incidents began in July 2024 when two elderly residents were approached at their homes by several men who allegedly claimed to be legitimate contractors and workers representing the City of Toronto.

Investigators say the victims were persuaded to pay for supposed roof repairs, mandatory backyard cleanups, and emergency home repairs.

Police allege the work was either unnecessary or never completed.

Arashdeep Singh, 23, was arrested Tuesday and charged with multiple offences, including fraud over $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, laundering proceeds of crime, conspiracy, and possession of proceeds of crime under $5,000.

The allegations have not been tested in court.

Police say the accused allegedly used the following business names during the scheme:

  • Xcellent Custom Homes Ltd.
  • Friendly Masonry Ltd.
  • 17051450 Canada Inc.

He was scheduled to appear in bail court on April 22.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are asking anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

How to Protect Yourself From Contractor Scams

Police are reminding residents — especially seniors and caregivers — to be cautious of unsolicited door-to-door contractors claiming urgent repairs are needed.

They advise homeowners to:

  • Get multiple independent quotes
  • Verify licences and credentials through trusted sources
  • Avoid high-pressure tactics
  • Be cautious of escalating costs
  • Never feel rushed into making immediate payments

Authorities also encourage anyone who believes they may have been victimized to report the matter to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

The case serves as another reminder for families to check in on older relatives and discuss common scams targeting vulnerable residents.
