City of Brampton Expands Free Recreation Access for Seniors Aged 65+

The City of Brampton has taken a major step toward promoting active and healthy lifestyles among its senior residents by expanding access to free recreation services for those aged 65 and over. The move comes as part of the city’s broader strategy to encourage physical and mental well-being among older adults.

As of this month, Brampton residents aged 65 and older are eligible for free access to a wide range of programs and memberships offered by city-run facilities. This is a significant enhancement to last year’s initiative, which offered similar access only to those aged 70 and above.

The free programs now available include:

  • Fitness centre membership
  • Racquet sports (squash and racquetball)
  • Swimming and skating memberships
  • Walking track access
  • Aquafit and group fitness drop-ins
  • Dance, sports, and general interest programs
  • Public skates and swims, including shinny and shoot-around sessions
  • Group lessons in swimming and skating

To register, residents must show proof of Brampton residency (such as a driver’s licence or utility bill), proof of identity and age, and Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.

According to the City, more than 7,000 seniors aged 70+ participated in the free membership program last year. With the age threshold now lowered to 65, the initiative is expected to benefit thousands more.

“We heard loud and clear from the community that recreation should be accessible, especially for the physical and mental health of our seniors,” said Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, Chair of Brampton’s Community Services. “Expanding this membership to include residents aged 65 and older is a proactive health care measure that ensures more seniors in our community have the chance to stay healthy, engaged, and active.”

This development has been welcomed by senior groups and community organizations across Brampton, including the Flower City Friends Club, which advocates for better access and inclusion for older adults.

For more information or to enroll in the free recreation membership, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Brampton’s official website or contact their local community centre.
