Zelenskyy to Meet Trump in Washington After U.S.-Russia Summit Fails to Secure Ceasefire

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday, following a U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska that ended without halting the 3½-year war in Ukraine.

Trump, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying a full peace agreement is the “best way” to end the conflict — a position aligning with Moscow’s stance. European leaders, who were not invited to the summit, had pushed for a ceasefire ahead of negotiations.

Zelenskyy, also excluded from the Alaska meeting, said he held a 90-minute conversation with Trump early Saturday and will use the upcoming talks to “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.”

European leaders issued a joint statement after speaking with Trump and Zelenskyy, pledging support for a potential trilateral summit and insisting Ukraine must receive “ironclad security guarantees.” They also reiterated that “international borders must not be changed by force.”

Putin left the summit without committing to end hostilities, and Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory continued overnight. Analysts say the meeting allowed Moscow to ease its diplomatic isolation without offering substantive concessions.
