Kyiv, July 21: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has replaced the country’s Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, appointing General Mykhailo Drapatyi to lead Ukraine’s armed forces as the country continues its defence against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
The leadership change follows nearly a week of public demonstrations in Kyiv after the removal of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose dismissal sparked criticism and renewed debate over Ukraine’s wartime leadership and military strategy.
Announcing the appointment, President Zelenskyy said the decision was intended to “reset” Ukraine’s military leadership while strengthening the country’s defence efforts.
“Our shared wish is one – victory over the enemy and conditions at the front and in pressure on Russia that would force Russia toward peace,” Zelenskyy said, while thanking General Syrskyi for his service and expressing confidence in General Drapatyi’s leadership.
The President also acknowledged the need to resolve internal disagreements within the military command and address ongoing challenges related to troop mobilization and front-line operations.
Former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, widely credited with advancing Ukraine’s military technology and drone capabilities, had publicly criticized General Syrskyi before his dismissal. Fedorov argued that Ukraine needed greater innovation and modernization in its military strategy, while accusing Syrskyi of resisting key reforms.
The disagreement reflected broader debates within Ukraine’s defence establishment over balancing traditional battlefield tactics with rapidly evolving technologies such as drones and digital warfare.
Following the leadership changes, Zelenskyy met with Fedorov and reportedly offered him a senior government position focused on coordinating Ukraine’s technology sector. It remains unclear whether Fedorov has accepted the offer.
Despite the military reshuffle, it is uncertain whether the changes will satisfy demonstrators, many of whom have called for greater accountability and a more effective wartime strategy as Ukraine continues to face mounting casualties and battlefield challenges.
The Kremlin dismissed the significance of the appointment, with Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Moscow does not expect the change in Ukraine’s military leadership to alter the situation on the battlefield.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian toll of the war continues to rise. According to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, 1,396 civilians were killed and 7,978 injured during the first six months of 2026, representing a 37 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.
Both Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range attacks in recent months. Russia has continued launching missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure, while Ukraine has expanded drone operations targeting military and energy facilities inside Russian territory.
General Mykhailo Drapatyi is regarded as one of Ukraine’s most respected battlefield commanders. He earned recognition for helping halt Russian advances during the conflict in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and later played key roles in defending Kryvyi Rih, reclaiming parts of the Kherson region and organizing the successful defence of the Kharkiv region against renewed Russian offensives.
His appointment comes at a critical stage in the war as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its military effectiveness while continuing to pursue international support and diplomatic efforts toward a lasting peace.
