York Regional Police Officer Charged with Sexual Assault and Breach of Trust

A York Regional Police officer has been charged with sexual assault and breach of trust following an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU says it was contacted by York police in February 2024 about alleged offences that occurred in Vaughan in December 2023. After a probe, investigators laid one count each of sexual assault and breach of trust against the male officer. His name has not been released, as the SIU says identifying him could lead to the identification of the complainant, which could negatively impact the complainant’s mental health. The officer appeared in a Newmarket court on June 24 and is scheduled to return on September 16. The SIU, citing the matter being before the courts and the accused’s right to a fair trial, declined further comment. The civilian watchdog is responsible for investigating incidents in Ontario involving police that result in death, serious injury, firearm discharge, or allegations of sexual assault.
