Canada’s privacy commissioner, Philippe Dufresne, has launched an investigation into whether the social media platform X is properly handling Canadians’ personal information under federal privacy laws.
In a letter to New Democrat MP Brian Masse, Dufresne confirmed that his office will examine how X collects, uses, and discloses personal data, particularly in relation to training artificial intelligence models. The move comes after Masse raised concerns earlier this week about whether the platform is putting Canadians’ personal information at risk.
Dufresne stated that an investigator has been assigned to assess the issue. However, he clarified that other concerns raised by Masse—specifically regarding X’s use on the devices of government employees and parliamentarians—fall outside his jurisdiction.
X, formerly known as Twitter, has faced increased scrutiny since billionaire Elon Musk acquired and rebranded the platform in 2022. The investigation adds to growing concerns over data privacy and the role of social media companies in AI development.
