Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 401: Manpreet Gill Pleads Guilty, Released on Probation

Infant and Grandparents Killed in Tragic Incident; Community Demands Justice

December 19, 2024 – Manpreet Gill, a passenger involved in a devastating wrong-way crash on Highway 401 that claimed four lives, including a three-month-old infant and his grandparents, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Having served 5.5 months in jail, Gill was released on probation, sparking widespread outrage over the sentence.

The April 29 tragedy occurred following a liquor store robbery in Clarington, which escalated into a high-speed police pursuit. Gill, acting as a “lookout” during the theft, was in the U-Haul van that later drove against oncoming traffic on Highway 401, resulting in a fiery multi-vehicle collision.

The crash killed Aditya Vivaan, a three-month-old baby, and his visiting grandparents from India, leaving his parents injured and the community in shock. The U-Haul driver, Gagandeep Singh, 21, was also killed, while Gill sustained serious injuries.

Gill faced 13 charges but was not implicated in the deaths or the police chase. In November, he pleaded guilty to three charges, including theft under $5,000, with other charges withdrawn. Justice Russell Wood sentenced Gill to 5.5 months in jail—equivalent to time already served—and two years of probation.

Speaking through a Punjabi interpreter, Gill admitted to struggling with opioid addiction and breaching previous probation orders. Justice Wood highlighted the potential for “immigration consequences” stemming from Gill’s conviction.

The tragedy has reignited debates around police pursuit policies. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s police oversight agency, continues to investigate the officers’ actions during the chase. Spokesperson Monica Hudon confirmed the ongoing review of traffic camera footage, body-worn camera recordings, and interviews with dozens of witnesses.

“This tragedy underscores the devastating ripple effects of crime and reckless decisions,” said a local resident attending a vigil for the victims.

The crash has left an indelible mark on the victims’ families and the broader community, highlighting the need for accountability and systemic reform.
