Women Rule the VMAs: Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Chappell Roan Steal the Show

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, Taylor Swift continued her winning streak by securing the award for Best Collaboration for her song “Fortnight” with Post Malone. During her acceptance speech, Swift paid tribute to the victims of 9/11, marking the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy, before turning her attention to her collaborator, praising Post Malone for being a favorite within the music industry.

Women dominated the night, with notable performances such as Chappell Roan, who brought a medieval-themed set to the stage. Roan, dressed in armor and performing her hit “Good Luck, Babe,” electrified the audience with dancers dressed as knights, creating a visually stunning spectacle.

Katy Perry received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award and delivered an eight-song medley of her career-defining hits, including “Roar,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Firework.” In her humorous acceptance speech, she referenced the challenges of performing during her period, drawing laughter and applause.

The night also featured standout performances from Blackpink’s LISA, Anitta, Shawn Mendes, and Eminem, with Slim Shady look-alikes accompanying his performance of “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me”.

Swift leads the nominations with 12 nods and continues to be a strong presence at the VMAs, standing just behind Beyoncé in terms of total wins. As the night progresses, Swift’s potential to make history looms large, with her poised to surpass Beyoncé’s record if she secures enough wins.
