The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum beginning Wednesday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Trump is set to sign an executive order later today, increasing the tariffs from 25 to 50 per cent.
This move comes just months after the initial 25 per cent tariffs were imposed in March. Trump reaffirmed his intention to raise the duties during a visit to a steel plant last Friday, pledging continued support for American steelworkers.
When asked about possible exemptions for trading partners like Canada, Leavitt said the president is standing by his commitment to protect domestic manufacturing and jobs, indicating that no exemptions are expected.
The decision has sparked concern north of the border. Canadian aluminum and steel industries have warned that the increased tariffs could have devastating economic consequences and are urging the federal government to respond with immediate support measures.
As of now, Ottawa has not announced any countermeasures, but pressure is mounting from industry leaders and stakeholders.
