WestJet Boosts Ontario Winter Flights to the Tropics Amid Sunwing Takeover

Ontario travellers looking to escape the cold this winter will have more sunny options, as WestJet expands its flight schedule to tropical destinations across the Caribbean.

The airline has announced a five per cent increase in flight capacity from Toronto Pearson International Airport for the 2025/2026 winter season. Among the highlights are new direct flights to Havana and a 38 per cent boost in service to Varadero, Cuba—one of Canada’s favourite resort getaways.

“WestJet is proud to offer our largest sun destination schedule for Ontario this winter,” said John Weatherill, Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer at WestJet.

The airline is also stepping in to fill the gap left by the closure of Sunwing Airlines, taking over several of its routes, including direct service to Samaná in the Dominican Republic. WestJet says it is committed to maintaining affordable travel options for former Sunwing customers.

“We understand how important value is to our guests,” Weatherill said. “We are committed to offering competitive fares and bundled vacation packages through Sunwing Vacations to make sun-soaked escapes more accessible to Canadians.”

Beyond Toronto, WestJet is also increasing flight frequency out of regional airports in Hamilton and Thunder Bay, with enhanced service to Punta Cana.

With more destinations, added routes, and bundled vacation packages, WestJet’s winter schedule promises to make flying south easier—and warmer—than ever for Ontario travellers.
