Several new cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Mississauga and Brampton, according to Peel Public Health. Mosquito testing last week revealed six positive traps, prompting renewed warnings for residents to take precautions against the disease.
The affected areas include one trap in Mississauga at Dixie Road and Lakeshore Road East, and five in Brampton at Cottrelle Boulevard and The Gore Road, Queen Street East and Kennedy Road North, Queen Street East and West Drive, Torbram Road and Bovaird Drive East, and Williams Parkway and Chinguacousy Road.
While the risk of human infection remains low, West Nile virus can be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, leading to symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches. Residents are encouraged to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and eliminate stagnant water on their properties to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
Peel Public Health continues to monitor mosquito populations and treat areas of stagnant water with larvicide to curb the spread of the virus. Residents can report stagnant water sites to Peel Public Health for further action.
