French NBA sensation Victor Wembanyama is turning heads once again—this time not on the court, but at the historic Shaolin Temple in central China. The 7’3” San Antonio Spurs center, known for his towering presence and incredible rookie season, was recently spotted with a shaved head, seemingly embracing a period of spiritual retreat and reflection.
A viral image, shared widely across Chinese state media and by the NBA’s official account on Chinese social media platform Weibo, shows Wembanyama sitting pensively before small Buddha statues in a guest room used by abbots. Though the original source of the image remains unconfirmed, Chinese outlets and NBA China report that the All-Star has embarked on a 10-day retreat at the 1,500-year-old monastery located in Henan province.
The Shaolin Temple, world-renowned for its Zen Buddhist teachings and kung fu tradition, offers structured retreats centered on meditation, discipline, and mindfulness—aimed at helping participants disconnect from the distractions of the modern world. Wembanyama, 21, has not publicly commented on his visit, nor has he posted about it on his social media channels.
The French phenom endured a challenging 2024–25 NBA season, having been sidelined in February with a rare blood clot in his right shoulder. After weeks of recovery, the Spurs were officially eliminated from playoff contention. Now, it appears Wembanyama is using his offseason to seek balance and inner strength, possibly away from the limelight.
While the Shaolin Temple declined to confirm his stay, a local Henan province outlet reported that temple personnel acknowledged his presence but declined to share details, citing privacy.
Before arriving at the monastery, Wembanyama was seen enjoying tourist attractions in Beijing. Videos posted by locals show him shopping, playing pickup basketball, walking in public parks, and visiting the Great Wall of China. The Spurs even shared a clip of his Great Wall adventure, where Wembanyama says, “It’s Victor Wembanyama. Life in China on the Great Wall itself, having an amazing time. It’s crazy.”
The Shaolin Temple has a history of attracting high-profile visitors. Earlier this year, popular U.S. YouTuber IShowSpeed also trained with kung fu masters at the site, drawing millions of views online.
As Wembanyama continues his low-profile retreat, fans are left wondering if this spiritual journey will bring a refreshed mindset—and perhaps new moves—when he returns to the NBA hardwood.
