Viral Audio Claims Indian Woman Married in Pakistan Is Being Harassed; Authorities Probe Case

An emotional audio clip circulating on social media has renewed attention on the case of Sarabjeet Kaur, an Indian woman who travelled to Pakistan for a Sikh pilgrimage last year, later converted to Islam and married a Pakistani man. The audio, whose authenticity has not been independently verified, features a woman believed to be Kaur alleging harassment in Pakistan and pleading to be allowed to return to India.

Kaur, 48, a resident of Amanipur village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district, entered Pakistan in November 2025 as part of a group of about 2,000 Sikh pilgrims who crossed the Wagah border to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. While the rest of the pilgrims returned to India after a few days, Kaur did not.

Pakistani police later said she married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura district near Lahore, a day after her arrival on Nov. 4.

In the viral audio, Kaur is heard saying her situation in Pakistan is “not good,” alleging harassment by her husband and his family and expressing distress over being separated from her children in India. She is also heard denying claims that she travelled to Pakistan as a spy, saying she went there to have alleged obscene photos of her deleted.

Following their marriage, Kaur and Hussain approached the Lahore High Court, alleging police harassment and interference in their marriage. Justice Farooq Haider ordered authorities to stop harassing the couple.

Despite the court order, Kaur was later detained and sent to a government-run shelter home in Lahore, according to a Punjab government source. Authorities are reportedly seeking her deportation, while Hussain remains in police custody. An earlier attempt to deport Kaur was unsuccessful due to the closure of the Wagah–Attari border.

In previous video statements, Kaur said she had approached the Indian embassy in Islamabad to extend her visa and had also applied for Pakistani citizenship. She stated that she married Hussain of her own will after divorcing her former husband in India and said she was given the Muslim name Noor before the nikah ceremony.

The case has drawn political attention in Pakistan. A former Punjab Assembly member has petitioned the court alleging national security concerns and questioning Kaur’s continued stay in the country after her visa expired.

Indian and Pakistani authorities have not issued fresh official statements in response to the viral audio, and the circumstances surrounding Kaur’s claims remain under investigation.
