Brampton has welcomed a new leader at the helm of its Fire and Emergency Services. Nick Ruller, a seasoned firefighter with over 20 years of experience across Ontario, has been appointed as the new Chief of Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES). The announcement was made on Wednesday, marking a new chapter for the city’s fire department.
Ruller, who has been serving as Acting Deputy Fire Chief since 2022, steps into the role following the departure of former Chief Bill Boyes, who has taken on the position of Brampton’s Commissioner of Community Services. With more than two decades of firefighting experience, including seven years in leadership roles, Ruller’s appointment reflects his deep expertise and commitment to public safety.
In a statement, Boyes expressed confidence in his successor, highlighting Ruller’s vision and leadership skills. “Nick has the capability to ensure that BFES remains a progressive public safety leader, delivering exceptional service to all who live, work, study, and play in our community,” Boyes said.
Ruller’s extensive career includes time as Fire Chief for Niagara-on-the-Lake, as well as roles in other municipalities, including Toronto. His qualifications include a Master of Arts in Leadership from the University of Guelph, an Advanced Certificate in Public Administration from Toronto Metropolitan University, and completion of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Institute Independent Study Program.
Mayor Patrick Brown also praised Ruller’s appointment, stating, “Nick has demonstrated strong leadership throughout his career, and I am confident he will continue to drive innovation and excellence in Brampton’s fire services, ensuring the highest level of safety for our residents.”

Regional Councillor Rowena Santos emphasized Ruller’s key role, saying, “Nick Ruller’s vast experience and dedication to public safety make him the right person to lead Brampton’s Fire and Emergency Services. His commitment to innovation and progress will ensure that our city continues to receive world-class emergency services.”
Regional Councillor Paul Vicente added, “Nick’s leadership will be instrumental in maintaining and enhancing the high standards of safety and service that Brampton’s residents depend on. His experience and vision will undoubtedly strengthen our fire services and keep our community well-protected.”

Councillor Navjit Kaur Brar also commended the appointment, stating, “Nick Ruller’s commitment to both his profession and the community is evident. His leadership will ensure that our fire services are responsive, forward-thinking, and always focused on the safety and well-being of Brampton’s diverse residents.”

In addition to his professional credentials, Ruller is a volunteer firefighter and a local softball coach, further demonstrating his commitment to community service. His appointment signals a continued focus on safety and progressive leadership for the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.
