Mississauga and Brampton continue to grapple with a wave of vehicle thefts, with over 460 vehicles stolen in the past 31 days, despite a noticeable decline compared to previous months.
According to Peel Regional Police data, a total of 463 vehicles, including cars, trucks, and motorcycles, were reported stolen from September 27 to October 27. Mississauga saw 258 incidents, Brampton had 204, and Caledon reported one theft. This averages out to approximately 14 vehicles stolen per day across these cities.
The breakdown of stolen vehicles includes 340 cars, 109 trucks, nine motorcycles, and five listed under “others.” As of the latest update, nine of these cases have been resolved, while 438 are under investigation, and 16 have been marked as unsolved.
Hotspots Identified Amid Decline in Thefts
Despite these concerning numbers, the region saw a 14.4% drop in thefts compared to August, when 568 incidents were reported. Police have identified two prominent hotspots this month—Airport Road with 13 thefts and Great Lakes Drive with 22 incidents.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance, particularly in areas most affected by these crimes. Peel police shared a series of tips to help residents protect their vehicles from theft, advising the use of steering wheel locks, secure parking in garages, data port locks, and quality video surveillance systems.
Notable Incidents and Preventive Measures
In addition to the rising theft numbers, recent incidents have drawn significant public attention. These include a home invasion in Mississauga where victims were forced to hand over keys to luxury vehicles and an incident involving the arrest of a man with a loaded gun linked to high-end vehicle thefts worth $1.5 million.
Authorities urge residents to remain cautious and take proactive steps to safeguard their vehicles. For more information on how to protect your car, Peel police have shared detailed preventive measures, including parking in locked garages when possible and installing deterrent devices.
