U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Thursday, hinting at significantly higher tariffs on Canada and the European Union if they collaborate to undermine the American economy. In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump stated, “If the European Union teams up with Canada to inflict economic damage on the USA, they’ll face massive tariffs—far beyond what’s currently on the table—to safeguard the greatest ally they’ve ever known.”
The statement follows Trump’s recent rollout of a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles, a move that has intensified global trade tensions. With the new auto tariffs set to kick in on April 3, alongside existing duties on steel, aluminum, and goods from Mexico, Canada, and China, allies are bracing for impact. Trump also plans to unveil additional reciprocal tariffs targeting nations driving the U.S. trade deficit, starting April 2.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen slammed the auto tariffs as “a blow to businesses and a burden on consumers,” while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called them “an outright assault on our workforce,” hinting at potential retaliation. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford voiced support for tit-for-tat measures, declaring, “A tariff for a tariff is fair game.”
