Trump Taps Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to Lead New ‘Efficiency Task Force’The Billionaire Entrepreneurs Aim to Reshape Federal Spending and Reduce Waste

A month ago, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, warned that a second Donald Trump presidency could bring “temporary hardship” as Americans adjusted to reduced government spending to address the national debt. On Tuesday, Musk moved closer to a central role in that effort as President-elect Trump announced that he and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Efficiency Task Force.”

The task force, formally titled the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), will focus on “dismantling bureaucracy, cutting excess regulations, reducing wasteful expenditures, and restructuring federal agencies,” according to Trump.

In a statement, Trump described DOGE as the potential “Manhattan Project of our time,” emphasizing that the initiative has been a long-standing Republican ambition. DOGE will work with the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), though details on how the task force will function remain vague.

Musk, a major donor to Trump’s campaign, declared that DOGE will “send shockwaves through the system” and target government waste within the $6.5 trillion federal budget. Trump added that the task force’s work will be completed by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. He framed this timeline as a commitment to delivering a “smaller government” as a “perfect gift” to the American people.

Criticism and Controversy

Critics have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, noting that Musk’s companies, including SpaceX, have benefited significantly from federal contracts. SpaceX, for instance, holds a $1.8 billion contract with an intelligence agency to develop a satellite surveillance network. Detractors argue that Musk’s dual role as a contractor and government reformer could create ethical challenges.

The announcement has also reignited debate over Trump’s tax policies. His 2017 tax reform, which slashed corporate tax rates, has been criticized for exacerbating the national deficit. Trump has pledged to maintain those cuts and proposed further reductions, raising questions about how DOGE’s cost-saving goals align with such fiscal policies.

Proponents of DOGE argue that the initiative could revolutionize government operations and address inefficiencies that have persisted for decades. They view Musk and Ramaswamy’s entrepreneurial track records as assets for creating a streamlined, more accountable government.

Despite the optimism, the lack of specifics surrounding DOGE’s structure and strategy has fueled skepticism. Observers question whether the task force can deliver on its lofty promises without disrupting essential services or disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations.

As the nation watches this bold experiment unfold, the Efficiency Task Force could redefine the relationship between private-sector principles and public-sector governance — for better or worse.
