WASHINGTON — The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump is actively considering options to acquire Greenland, describing the move as a strategic national security priority aimed at strengthening America’s position in the Arctic.
According to the White House, discussions within the administration include a range of pathways, from diplomatic and economic arrangements to more forceful measures, with officials stating that all options available to a commander-in-chief remain under consideration. The administration argues that greater U.S. control in the Arctic region is necessary to deter growing activity by rival powers and to safeguard long-term security interests.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has repeatedly stated that it does not wish to become part of the United States. European leaders, along with Canada, have reiterated their support for Greenland’s right to self-determination and Denmark’s sovereignty, warning that any attempt to seize the territory would severely strain transatlantic relations and destabilize the NATO alliance.
Despite the opposition, U.S. officials say the president views Greenland as strategically critical due to its Arctic location and its untapped reserves of minerals essential for advanced technology and defence applications.
