WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has ordered the cancellation of Kamala Harris’ Secret Service detail, ending an extension quietly granted by former President Joe Biden before leaving office.
By law, former vice-presidents receive six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. For Harris, that protection expired on July 21, but Biden had signed a confidential directive extending it by one year. On Thursday, Trump revoked that order in a memorandum to the Department of Homeland Security, effective September 1.
The move comes just weeks before Harris embarks on a high-profile book tour promoting 107 Days, her memoir on her brief 2024 presidential campaign. Without federal protection, her aides warn she will lose not only round-the-clock bodyguards but also the threat monitoring and intelligence support that accompany a Secret Service detail.
“The Vice-President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” Harris senior adviser Kirsten Allen said.
California officials, including Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, expressed concern. Bass called Trump’s decision “another act of revenge,” warning it leaves Harris vulnerable at a time when public officials face heightened threats.
Replacing the protection privately could cost millions annually. Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, lost his security detail in July when his standard coverage expired.
The White House and Secret Service have not commented.
