Trump Picks Loyalist Sergio Gor as US Ambassador to India and Regional Envoy

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has nominated Sergio Gor, a close aide and White House personnel director, to serve simultaneously as ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs — an unusual dual appointment that analysts say could reshape Washington’s diplomatic approach to the region.

The 38-year-old Gor, who has no prior diplomatic experience, is a longtime Trump loyalist. He has worked on presidential campaigns, co-published books with the Trump family, and most recently led efforts to vet thousands of appointees across the federal government. Trump praised him as someone who “hired nearly 4,000 America First Patriots across every Department of our Federal Government.”

A Dual Role With Regional Implications

Traditionally, the ambassadorship to India has been a standalone role, reflecting New Delhi’s growing strategic importance. By combining it with a broader South and Central Asia portfolio — spanning Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and beyond — Trump may be signaling a shift away from treating India as a special case.

“This could dilute India’s unique diplomatic status, placing it within a wider regional framework that includes its rivals,” said one analyst.

For Pakistan and its neighbors, the move raises questions: if India becomes the hub for regional US diplomacy, Washington could use New Delhi as the main base to coordinate policy across South Asia — a shift that might alter political and security dynamics.

Trade and Tariff Pressures

The appointment also comes amid escalating trade tensions. Earlier this month, Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% over New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, threatening more than $48 billion in exports.

With Gor overseeing multiple countries, experts warn India’s trade issues could receive less dedicated attention. Instead, Washington may link tariffs, sanctions, and export controls to broader regional strategies — making negotiations slower and more transactional.

Who Is Sergio Gor?

Born Sergey Gorokhovsky in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Gor immigrated to the US and became deeply involved in Republican politics. He rose as a MAGA movement stalwart, building close ties with Trump and Donald Trump Jr. His hardline vetting of federal appointments has at times drawn controversy, including public clashes with figures like Elon Musk.

If confirmed by the Senate, Gor would wield significant influence at a sensitive moment for US-India relations — overseeing not only America’s most important South Asian partnership but also its dealings with regional hotspots from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka.
