U.S. President Donald Trump fired back at Canada’s tariff counterpunch on Tuesday (March 4), promising to escalate his own levies in lockstep with Canada’s retaliation.
In a mid-afternoon jab on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Tell Governor Trudeau of Canada that his Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S. will trigger an instant Reciprocal Tariff hike to match it!” He’s kept up the “governor” dig at Justin Trudeau while pushing for Canada to join the U.S. as its 51st state.
About an hour earlier, Trudeau had laid out Canada’s response on X: “The second U.S. tariffs hit this morning, Canada’s answer kicked in too. We’re slapping 25% tariffs on $155 billion in American goods—$30 billion right now, the rest in 21 days.”
Around the same time, he added: “The U.S. ignited a trade war today against its tightest ally and friend—Canada. We’re fair-minded, but we won’t flinch from this fight. Not with our nation on the line.”
