Donald Trump has announced JD Vance, a junior senator from Ohio, as his vice presidential running mate for the upcoming November 5 election. This announcement comes as Trump solidifies his control over the Republican Party, following his official nomination just days after surviving an assassination attempt.
JD Vance, 39, known for his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” initially criticized Trump but has since become one of his staunchest supporters. Vance’s selection aims to strengthen Trump’s appeal in Ohio, a crucial swing state with 18 electoral votes, and attract younger voters.
“After careful consideration, I believe Senator JD Vance is the best choice for Vice President of the United States,” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform.
Donald Trump Jr. praised the decision, stating, “I think he is an incredible pick. No one is more articulate than him.”
President Joe Biden criticized Vance’s selection on X, accusing him of advocating for policies that would raise taxes on middle-class families while benefiting the wealthy.
Rodney Mutterspaw, a former police chief and city councilman from Vance’s hometown of Middletown, Ohio, expressed excitement about the pick. “I think he can see both sides of issues, and most politicians can’t. That’s why he’ll be successful if they’re elected,” Mutterspaw told The National.
Vance recently drew attention for blaming the Biden campaign’s rhetoric for the assassination attempt on Trump. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination,” Vance wrote on X.
The Republican National Convention in Milwaukee saw strong support for Trump, who secured 2,265 delegates during the primaries. The official nomination was confirmed as state delegates cast their ballots at the Fiserv Forum arena, while protesters gathered outside to rally on various issues.
Speculation about Trump’s running mate had included Florida Senator Marco Rubio and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. Ultimately, Trump’s decision to choose Vance underscores his desire to unite the country after the recent attempt on his life.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine celebrated the announcement, saying, “This brings a great American story – he served in the military, he’s extremely articulate. JD Vance represents a new generation of leaders in this country and is poised to be the next vice president of the United States.”
The convention marks a pivotal moment as Trump and Biden prepare for a tightly contested election rematch. Trump, recovering from the assassination attempt, remains focused on his campaign, determined to attend the convention and continue his push for the presidency.
