Vivek Ramaswamy has secured the Republican nomination for governor of Ohio, strengthening his political rise as a prominent ally of U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the November general election.
Projected primary election results released Tuesday night showed the entrepreneur and former presidential candidate defeating challenger Casey Putsch to claim the Republican ticket in one of the most closely watched races in the Midwest.
Speaking to supporters after his victory, Ramaswamy pledged to focus on strengthening Ohio’s future and restoring economic opportunity for residents across the state.
“We are going to leave this state and this country better than we found it,” he told cheering supporters during his victory speech.
On the Democratic side, former Ohio public health director Amy Acton advanced unopposed and is expected to challenge Ramaswamy in what could become one of the most closely followed governor’s races in the United States this year.
Acton emphasized affordability and economic pressures facing families across Ohio, telling supporters that working people must once again become the top political priority.
The race quickly drew national attention due to Ramaswamy’s close relationship with Trump and growing influence within the Republican Party. Trump celebrated the victory through a series of social media posts praising Ramaswamy’s leadership and political potential.
“I know Vivek well, competed against him, and he is something special,” Trump wrote online, calling him “young, strong and smart.”
U.S. Vice-President JD Vance also publicly backed Ramaswamy, travelling to Cincinnati to cast his ballot and support Republican candidates aligned with the Trump movement.
Ramaswamy first gained national prominence during the 2024 Republican presidential primary campaign, where his aggressive debate performances, strong conservative messaging and extensive use of podcasts and social media helped build a large following despite his eventual withdrawal from the race.
Following the presidential campaign, he became a key Trump supporter and was briefly involved in efforts surrounding Trump’s proposed Department of Government Efficiency initiative before the project later shifted under the influence of Elon Musk.
Political analysts say Ramaswamy entered the Ohio governor’s race with significant advantages, including strong name recognition, Trump’s endorsement and major personal financial resources. According to reports, he loaned approximately $25 million of his own money to support his campaign.
The upcoming general election is expected to focus heavily on the lingering political divisions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Acton, who served as Ohio’s public health director during the height of the pandemic, played a visible role in implementing health restrictions and emergency measures under Republican Governor Mike DeWine.
Republicans have continued criticizing pandemic-related restrictions including business closures, masking rules and delays to Ohio’s 2020 primary election.
Ramaswamy recently released campaign advertisements accusing Acton of abusing power during the pandemic response. However, Governor DeWine publicly defended her actions, stating the controversial decisions were ultimately his responsibility.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s primaries also highlighted Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party in neighboring Indiana, where several Trump-backed challengers defeated incumbent Republican lawmakers who had opposed the president’s proposed congressional redistricting plan.
Political observers say the primary results demonstrate Trump’s continued dominance over Republican politics ahead of the crucial midterm elections later this year, while also positioning Ramaswamy as one of the party’s rising national figures.
