Trudeau-Era Heavyweights Blair, Lametti, Wilkinson Poised for Key Diplomatic Posts

Three of Justin Trudeau’s most prominent former cabinet ministers are set to take on high-profile diplomatic roles, marking what could be a significant reshaping of Canada’s global presence.

Sources confirm that former defence minister Bill Blair will succeed Ralph Goodale as Canada’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom. David Lametti, who served as Trudeau’s justice minister and is currently Prime Minister Mark Carney’s principal secretary, is expected to be named Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations, replacing Bob Rae. Meanwhile, former energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson has been offered the ambassadorship to the European Union, though he is reportedly still weighing the decision.

The three men together bring nearly two decades of cabinet experience, and their appointments would extend the Trudeau-era influence into Canada’s international diplomacy. Blair, when asked about the appointment, said he remains focused on his current government duties, while Lametti’s swift move from Carney’s inner circle to the UN post is raising eyebrows in Ottawa given his short tenure as principal secretary.

The news follows this week’s announcement that former deputy prime minister and finance minister Chrystia Freeland is leaving cabinet to become Canada’s Special Representative for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, suggesting a broader strategy to place experienced political veterans in key international positions as Canada navigates a turbulent global landscape.
