Trudeau Attends AI Summit in Paris as Trump Prepares New Tariffs on Canadian Imports

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Paris today for the AI Action Summit, engaging with world leaders and experts on the future of artificial intelligence. However, the diplomatic focus may soon shift, as U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports.

On Sunday, Trump confirmed in a Fox News interview that he will formally announce a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday, a move that directly impacts Canadian exports. The announcement comes just days after Canada and Mexico were granted a temporary 30-day reprieve from U.S. tariff threats.

Adding to tensions, Trump reiterated his controversial stance that Canada should become a U.S. state, responding to recent remarks by Trudeau in which the Prime Minister warned business leaders that Trump is “not joking” about the idea.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance is also attending the AI Action Summit in Paris, though no official meeting between Vance and Trudeau has been scheduled. With tensions rising over trade, a potential encounter between the two leaders could shape the future of Canada-U.S. relations in both AI and economic policy.

As Canada continues to position itself as a leader in artificial intelligence, the looming trade dispute with the U.S. raises concerns about economic stability and cross-border relations. With Trudeau focusing on AI and Trump escalating trade tensions, all eyes are on how these developments will unfold in the coming days.
