n an unprecedented turn of events following India’s thrilling Asia Cup 2025 final victory over Pakistan, the presentation ceremony descended into controversy as the Indian team refused to accept the winners’ trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi.
Despite securing a five-wicket win in the summit clash, the Suryakumar Yadav–led side chose to celebrate without the trophy after making it clear they would not receive the silverware from Naqvi. The incident resulted in lengthy delays during the post-match presentation, with only individual performers receiving awards. The Asia Cup trophy was ultimately removed from the stage and not presented publicly to the champions — a first in international cricket.
Tensions were evident throughout the evening. When Naqvi stepped onto the dais, Indian players stood at a distance, refusing to approach. Indian fans in the stands responded with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” while booing Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha during the runners-up formalities.
Reports indicate that India had informed the ACC in advance that they would not accept the trophy from Naqvi, citing discomfort with his presence. Although Emirates Cricket Board Vice-Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni was on stage and could have presented the trophy, Naqvi did not allow that arrangement.
The standoff culminated in the trophy being taken back inside the dressing room as Naqvi waited on stage. Meanwhile, Pakistani players remained absent from the field for nearly an hour after the match, further delaying proceedings.
The controversy followed a tournament marked by high political tension, including India avoiding the customary pre-toss photoshoots with Pakistan and declining handshakes with their opponents in earlier matches.
While the cricket on display reinforced India’s dominance over Pakistan in recent encounters, the chaotic scenes at the presentation raised serious questions about the ACC’s protocols and the role of its leadership in ensuring smooth conduct of the game’s showpiece events
