Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Owen Sound Police Service have charged three men from the United Kingdom in connection with the death of 44-year-old Sharifur Rahman, a restaurant owner who was assaulted outside his Owen Sound establishment on August 17, 2023.
The incident began when Rahman and his nephew were allegedly attacked following a dispute with three customers over payment at the downtown restaurant on 2nd Avenue East. Rahman sustained critical injuries and tragically passed away in hospital a week later.
After an extensive investigation, which included international collaboration, police identified the suspects as:
- Robert Evans, 24, charged with manslaughter
- Robert Busby Evans, 47, charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence
- Barry Evans, 54, also charged with accessory after the fact to commit an indictable offence
The three men are currently in the United Kingdom, where legal proceedings related to their extradition are underway. No timeline for their extradition has been provided.
In a statement, OPP spokesperson Agata Czajkowski noted the complexities of the case, emphasizing that certain details, including the relationship between the accused, cannot be disclosed to avoid jeopardizing the extradition process.
“We acknowledge the significant impact this case has had on the community and sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue our thorough and comprehensive investigation,” police said during Wednesday’s update.
This case has drawn widespread attention in Owen Sound, with many community members mourning the loss of Rahman, a respected local business owner. Police remain committed to ensuring justice is served and continue to work with international authorities to bring the suspects to Canada to face trial.
