Jorge Guillen, a 43-year-old man from Texas, tragically died after being electrocuted in a hot tub at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco on Tuesday evening. His wife, 35-year-old Lizette Zambrano, was also injured in the incident.
The couple, visiting from El Paso, Texas, were shocked by an electric discharge in the jacuzzi around 8:30 p.m. Bystanders attempted to pull them out of the water but were hindered by the electrical current. One woman was shocked while trying to help. Videos posted on social media captured the chaotic aftermath.
Authorities arrived to find Guillen submerged in the water. The resort has since shut down all hot tubs pending an investigation by the state attorney general’s office to determine the cause of the electric discharge and Guillen’s official cause of death.
A GoFundMe page has been established to support the couple’s family, raising over $30,000 by early Thursday afternoon to cover the costs of repatriating Guillen’s body and Zambrano’s medical expenses. Zambrano remains in critical condition at the hospital.
“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends,” the GoFundMe page reads. “The love they shared was one for ages.”
