Terry Fox to Appear on New $5 Bank Note

Terry Fox, Canada’s iconic Marathon of Hope runner and cancer research champion, will feature on the next $5 bill, the federal government announced in its fall economic statement.

Fox, who inspired millions through his cross-country fundraising run in 1980 after losing his leg to cancer, raised $24 million during his lifetime — equivalent to $1 for every Canadian at the time. Today, annual Terry Fox runs have generated over $850 million for cancer research.

Selected after a 2020 public consultation that shortlisted eight iconic Canadians, Fox will replace Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who is set to move to the $50 note.

“Terry Fox’s legacy transcends differences,” said Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West, Fox’s hometown leader, celebrating this national recognition.

Fox’s story is a testament to how one person’s determination can inspire a nation, encouraging Canadians to continue supporting cancer research.
