As the City of Brampton reaches the midpoint of the 2022-2026 council term, Regional Councillor Rowena Santos reflects on significant accomplishments and ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing community well-being and safety.
The Residential Rental Licensing (RRL) Pilot Program, initiated in January 2024, mandates landlords in Wards 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 to obtain licenses for their rental units. This program ensures compliance with property standards and fire codes through random inspections and escalating fines for repeat violations. As of September 16, 2024, the City has issued over 2,200 RRL business licenses and conducted more than 4,700 related inspections, resulting in fines exceeding $83,500.
An operational review of bylaw enforcement has been conducted to equip officers with the necessary tools and resources to effectively serve Brampton’s growing population. This initiative underscores the City’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for all residents.
Councillor Santos has championed advocacy efforts to the federal government, seeking a comprehensive plan to address housing and homelessness in Peel Region. The focus includes infrastructure support, funding for asylum seekers, and long-term investments in local infrastructure to combat the growing homelessness crisis.
The City has expanded the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras, adding 40 new cameras to local streets, bringing the total to 110. This measure aims to curb speeding and enhance road safety for all residents.
In response to the exploitation and trafficking of international students, Councillor Santos introduced a resolution focusing on strengthening local protections and advocating for systemic changes at provincial and federal levels. The City is working with community partners to develop a culturally sensitive pilot program offering wrap-around services, including housing assistance and mental health support, tailored to the unique needs of international students.
A derelict lawn bowling pitch has been transformed into a lit outdoor pickleball court at Calvert Park, addressing the growing demand for pickleball facilities and providing a safe environment for residents of all ages.
Brampton’s arts and culture sector is thriving. Among the notable initiatives is the commissioning of a memorial artwork dedicated to the late Premier William G. Davis, which will be prominently displayed at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. Further celebrating his legacy, the City proclaimed July 30, 2024, as Bill Davis Day, recognizing his profound contributions to the community.
Investments in youth initiatives, including the Susan Fennell and Century Garden Youth Hubs and her vey own Santos Youth Council, reflect a strong commitment to empowering Brampton’s young people. These programs focus on mentorship and providing opportunities for youth to grow, develop essential skills, and serve as ambassadors for the city.
The opening of the Seniors Health and Wellness Village at Peel Manor marks a transformative milestone in supporting seniors and caregivers across Brampton and Peel Region. The facility includes a Long Term Care Centre and a service hub designed to meet the needs of seniors and their caregivers, promoting dignity and independence.
Councillor Santos expresses gratitude to council colleagues, city staff, and the community for their engagement and support in building a brighter future for Brampton.
