Surrey, B.C. – Parts of Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood were locked down Monday afternoon after gunfire was directed at a Surrey Police Service (SPS) station, marking the third shooting in the city within 24 hours and sparking growing public concern over safety.
The SPS said the shooting occurred shortly after 4:00 p.m. near King George Boulevard and 107 Avenue, prompting officers to block traffic and pedestrian access while they secured the scene. No injuries were reported.
A suspect was taken into custody, but the situation remained “active” into the evening after the individual left a bag inside the police office, requiring the explosives disposal unit to assess any potential threat.
Indian Restaurant, Residence Also Targeted
Earlier that day, around 2:20 a.m., gunfire struck Ustaad G76, a popular Indian restaurant on King George Boulevard. Investigators believe the shooting may be linked to extortion cases that have affected several South Asian-owned businesses in the region.
Within the same hour, shots were also fired at a residence on 141 Street in Whalley while multiple people were inside. No injuries were reported. Police have not established any connection between this attack and extortion attempts.
Community on Edge
With three separate shootings in less than 24 hours, Surrey residents are expressing heightened concerns about public safety. Police are investigating whether the incidents are linked and are expected to release further details as the investigation continues.
The rapid succession of violent incidents has intensified pressure on law enforcement to address organized crime and extortion networks that have increasingly targeted businesses in the region, particularly those owned by members of the South Asian community.
