A major shift in Canada’s travel industry has officially taken place. Sunwing Airlines has ceased operations and is now fully merged with WestJet, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s few low-cost carriers.
The final Sunwing Vacations flight departed on May 28, after which all Sunwing package customers began flying exclusively with WestJet.
Originally acquired by Calgary-based WestJet in March 2023, Sunwing’s full integration was initially slated for October 26, 2024, but the timeline was accelerated. With the merger now complete, Sunwing aircraft will no longer be in service.
“This transition is important because it delivers a unified experience to our guests, both at the airport and in the sky,” said Andrew Dawson, president of Sunwing Vacations Group. “It also enhances connectivity and enables us to offer more vacation packages year-round.”
Dawson also extended his gratitude to Sunwing Airlines’ employees:
“We would not be here today without the dedication of the airline employees who helped make vacation dreams come true for Canadians coast-to-coast.”
As part of the merger, WestJet has absorbed 18 Boeing 737 aircraft and 2,000 employees. The airline has consolidated its fleet under a single air operator certificate.
This move follows the 2023 decision by WestJet to fold its ultra-low-cost brand Swoop into its mainline service. With Lynx Air also shutting down in early 2024 and Flair Airlines facing ongoing financial struggles, Canada’s low-cost travel market is shrinking, raising concerns about reduced competition and higher prices for travelers.
