Summer Surge: Over 11 Million Travellers to Pass Through Pearson Airport

Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga is gearing up for its busiest summer yet, with more than 11.2 million passengers expected to travel through its terminals over the next couple of months. That’s an increase of about 400,000 compared to last summer’s 10.8 million travellers, airport officials confirmed in a recent update.

Currently, Pearson is averaging 160,000 passengers per day across roughly 1,100 flights—solidifying its status as Canada’s largest and busiest airport.

“Toronto Pearson is continuously getting busier,” said airport spokesperson Sean Davidson. “We had 46 million passengers last year, and that number is only climbing—especially during the peak summer travel season.”

Europe is topping the charts for international getaways, with London, Paris, Rome, and Frankfurt leading the list of most popular destinations. But Canadians aren’t just looking overseas. Domestic travel is also booming, with vacationers setting their sights on places like Vancouver, Montreal, and even Drumheller, Alberta, via Calgary.

“Staycations and Canadian destinations are still very much in demand,” Davidson noted, adding that despite changes to U.S. travel protocols, major cities like New York, Chicago, and Atlanta remain popular choices.

To manage the travel surge, Pearson officials say they’ve fine-tuned operations across all terminals, aiming to ensure smooth travel experiences from check-in to takeoff.

“We’re ready for the crowds,” said Davidson. “Our team is excited to help millions of travellers kick off their summer vacations with ease.”
