Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation into the arrest of a 21-year-old Brampton man who was injured during an “interaction” with Barrie police on July 16, 2024.
The incident occurred when officers, present in the area of Meridian Place for an unrelated investigation, noticed the man allegedly involved in drug trafficking. Police say the suspect was found in possession of a loaded semi-automatic firearm, Canadian currency, and suspected cocaine and fentanyl.
The Brampton man faces numerous charges, including drug trafficking and firearms-related offenses. His identity has not been disclosed.
Details about the injury sustained by the accused or the nature of the “interaction” with police have not been released. The SIU, Ontario’s independent police oversight agency, is now investigating the case under its mandate to review incidents involving police that result in serious injury, death, or allegations of misconduct.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the SIU categorizing the case as a “custody injury.”
