Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Hamilton Restaurant Grows as Confirmed Cases Rise

Public health officials in Hamilton have confirmed additional cases of salmonella infection as an ongoing outbreak linked to a local restaurant continues to expand.

According to Hamilton Public Health, the number of confirmed cases connected to the Piper Arms Stoney Creek location on Stone Church Road East has risen to 13, up from nine earlier this week.

Officials also updated the hospitalization figures. While seven cases were initially reported, further review found that two individuals were treated in the emergency department but were not admitted. One additional hospitalization has since been identified, bringing the total number of hospital admissions to six.

In addition to the confirmed cases, another 44 people have reported symptoms consistent with salmonella infection after eating at the restaurant. Those cases have not yet been confirmed through laboratory testing and remain under investigation.

Health authorities say no specific food item has been identified as the source of the illness so far. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the cause of the outbreak.

The restaurant was ordered to close temporarily earlier this week to support the investigation and to ensure all food safety standards are met before it is allowed to reopen.

Salmonella is a food-borne illness that can cause fever, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. While many people recover without treatment, young children, seniors, pregnant individuals and those with weakened immune systems may face a higher risk of serious complications.

The growing outbreak highlights the importance of strong food safety practices and swift public health action when illnesses are reported.
