Salami-Linked Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 90 Canadians — Health Officials Declare It Over

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed that a salmonella outbreak tied to salami and cacciatore products has officially ended after sickening 90 people across four provinces.

The majority of cases — 69 — were reported in Alberta, with Ontario recording 19, and Manitoba and British Columbia each confirming one case. Ten people required hospitalization, though no deaths were reported.

Health officials say the outbreak occurred between mid-April and early August. More than 65 salami and cacciatore products were recalled during the investigation. Many of those who fell ill reported eating sandwiches or deli meats prepared with the recalled products.

The agency is reminding Canadians to practice safe food handling, including keeping deli meats refrigerated, washing hands and surfaces after handling raw or ready-to-eat meat, and following recall notices to avoid exposure to contaminated products.
