Canadians can add a touch of holiday sparkle to their celebrations with a new $2 commemorative coin that also functions as a Christmas tree ornament.
Although the coin is not Canadian legal tender, it is being offered exclusively to Canadian buyers through the Royal Canadian Mint. Officially titled the 2025 Snowman Winter Sleigh Ride fine silver coin, it is legal tender in the Solomon Islands.
The coin features a whimsical, ornament-shaped design depicting a cheerful snowman family gliding down a snow-covered hill on a candy cane–striped sled. Struck from one ounce of 99.99 per cent pure silver, it comes housed in a custom, ornament-style capsule that allows it to be easily hung on a Christmas tree.
According to the mint, the coin’s soft winter colours and shimmering accents are intended to capture the warmth and nostalgia of the holiday season. The reverse side features an effigy of King Charles III along with an inscription identifying the Solomon Islands as the issuing country.
Price and availability
The coin is priced at $189.95. While that may seem high for a holiday ornament, the mint notes that silver prices have climbed to more than $85 per ounce in recent weeks. Collectors may also be drawn to the coin’s limited mintage of just 2,500 pieces.
The coin was manufactured in Switzerland by MKS PAMP exclusively for MTB, a global precious metals dealer. Orders placed through the Royal Canadian Mint’s website are expected to ship by Dec. 23, in time for Christmas.
Other holiday-themed coins
The Royal Canadian Mint is also offering several other seasonal collectibles this year.
The Dear Santa one-ounce fine silver coin, priced at $169.95, has a limited mintage of 7,500 pieces and features a festive design inspired by Santa’s North Pole mailroom. It is also expected to ship by Dec. 23.
Another option is the Whimsical Holiday Tree Lenticular coin, a 50-cent piece made from 99.99 per cent fine silver. Featuring Churchill the polar bear and friends enjoying a toboggan ride, the coin weighs 12.3 grams and retails for $34.95.
Together, the offerings provide collectors and gift-givers with a range of holiday-themed keepsakes for the season.
