Rowena Santos Backs New Free Sports Locker Initiative Bringing Recreation Closer to Brampton Neighbourhoods

In a major step toward promoting healthier and more inclusive communities, the City of Brampton has launched an innovative new pilot program that will allow residents to borrow sports equipment for free at parks and outdoor recreation sites across the city.

The initiative, unveiled Monday through a partnership with Equip Sport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, introduces approximately 30 self-serve sports equipment lockers at high-use community parks, fields and courts throughout Brampton.

The new lockers are designed to make outdoor recreation easier, more convenient and more affordable for residents of all ages by removing one of the biggest barriers to participation — access to equipment.

Using the Equip Sport mobile app, residents can unlock sports gear directly from the lockers, use the equipment on site and return it once finished, all completely free of charge and without requiring a credit card or payment.

Available equipment may include basketballs, soccer balls, footballs and frisbees depending on the location, allowing families, youth and community members to enjoy spontaneous recreational activities closer to home without needing to own or transport equipment themselves.

City officials say the pilot reflects Brampton’s broader vision of building healthier, more active and socially connected neighbourhoods while encouraging casual outdoor play and increased physical activity.

Unlike traditional recreation programs tied to scheduled facility bookings or organized leagues, the locker system introduces a flexible “usage-over-ownership” model, giving residents the freedom to access equipment whenever they want to play.

The initiative is fully funded by Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and comes at no cost to taxpayers or users. Equip Sport will oversee the entire operation, including installation, maintenance, daily management and data reporting throughout the pilot phase.

Patrick Brown praised the program as an important investment in community wellness and accessibility, stating that recreation should be available to everyone and close to home.

He noted that the initiative helps remove barriers for residents while creating more opportunities for people of all ages to stay active and engaged in their communities.

Rowena Santos, who also serves as Chair of the Community Services Section for the City of Brampton, emphasized that access to sports equipment can often determine whether someone participates in recreational activities or remains on the sidelines.

She said the pilot supports a more inclusive approach to sport and physical activity by bringing free recreational opportunities directly into neighbourhood parks and public spaces.

Officials from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities highlighted the importance of reducing equipment costs and accessibility barriers, particularly for children and youth who may otherwise miss opportunities to participate in sports and active play.

Equip Sport CEO Vincent Borel described the initiative as part of a broader movement to transform parks and public spaces into more connected, active and community-driven environments.

Founded in Switzerland in 2021, Equip Sport has rapidly expanded its free-access sports locker concept across Europe and Canada, with hundreds of stations already operating internationally. Brampton now becomes the first municipality in the Greater Toronto Area and only the second city in Ontario to adopt the innovative program.

City officials say additional locations and future expansions are already being explored as the pilot rolls out across Brampton in the coming months.
