MISSISSAUGA — Peel Regional Police are investigating a surge in robberies across Mississauga and Brampton, with 43 incidents reported between July 9 and August 9 — averaging more than one a day.
Of these, 14 involved firearms, nine were committed with other weapons, one was a purse-snatching, and 19 were categorized as “other.” Brampton saw the bulk of the crimes, with 25 incidents compared to Mississauga’s 18.
Police data shows that only five cases have been solved so far, with 37 still under investigation and one deemed unsolved.
Hotspots for robberies included City Centre Drive, Hurontario Street, Lakeshore Road, and Maclaughlin Road, each with two incidents, and Sandalwood Parkway in Brampton, which saw three.
Notable cases over the past month included a 16-year-old Brampton boy charged in a string of home and jewelry store robberies across the GTA, violent robberies targeting members of the 2SLGBTQ+ South Asian community, and an armed bank robbery that led to the arrest of three teens from Mississauga and Brampton.
Peel police are urging residents and businesses to remain vigilant, improve lighting and surveillance, reduce cash on hand, and ensure employees are trained in robbery prevention. They stress that any robbery should be reported to police immediately.
