Report Finds Brampton Had Second-Highest Eviction Rate in GTA During Pandemic

A new report has revealed that Brampton recorded the second-highest eviction filing rate in the GTA during the pandemic, with 7.5 per cent of renter households facing eviction filings in 2020 and 2021. Only Oshawa reported a higher rate, according to research led by University of Toronto Mississauga PhD candidate Sean Grisdale.

The findings highlight disproportionate impacts on racialized renters in Peel Region, where Black and South Asian communities make up a significant share of Brampton’s population. Tenant advocates warn that corporate landlords, also known as financialized landlords, are driving these eviction filings, often targeting older, more affordable buildings in racialized neighbourhoods.

Peel ACORN, a tenant advocacy group, reports sharp increases in no-fault evictions, including a 230 per cent rise in N13 notices for renovations or demolitions between 2017 and 2022. Survey data shows many Brampton renters also face Above Guideline Rent Increases, poor housing conditions, and unresolved maintenance issues.

“Racialized people, low-income households, and new migrants bear a disproportionate share of no-fault eviction filings,” said LaSean Ebanks, co-chair of Peel ACORN.

The report underscores the intersection of geography, income, and race in shaping eviction risks, while tenant advocates are calling for stronger rent controls, landlord licensing, and anti-renoviction bylaws to safeguard affordable housing in Brampton and Peel Region.
