Regional Councillor Rowena Santos Leads Crime Awareness Initiative

Over 130 community members, including youth, adults, and seniors, gathered at Brampton City Hall for a comprehensive Crime Prevention Workshop organized by Regional Councillor Rowena Santos. The event aimed to educate residents on crime prevention strategies, personal safety measures, and fire safety awareness.

The workshop featured informative sessions led by experts from Peel Regional Police and Brampton Fire Services, covering a range of crucial topics, including:

  • Crime Mapping, Petty Theft & Porch Piracy
  • Break & Enter and Auto Theft Prevention
  • Fraud Awareness and Road Safety
  • Effective Crime Reporting
  • Fire Prevention and Emergency Response
  • Community Safety Townhall

In her opening remarks, Regional Councillor Rowena Santos highlighted the importance of proactive measures in crime prevention and fostering safer neighborhoods.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring the safety of our communities. By equipping residents with the right knowledge and resources, we are taking an important step towards preventing crime and enhancing security across Brampton. Collaboration between residents, law enforcement, and community leaders is key to building a resilient and informed community,” said Councillor Santos.

Speaking at the event, Officer Ariel Reyes of Peel Regional Police emphasized the importance of community awareness in crime prevention.

“Crime prevention starts with awareness and engagement. When residents are informed and proactive, we can create a safer environment for everyone in Brampton,” said Officer Reyes.

Similarly, Deputy Fire Chief Chantalle Cosgrove of Brampton Fire Services highlighted the connection between crime and fire safety, stating:

“Fire safety and crime prevention go hand in hand. Knowing how to react in emergencies and implementing safety measures at home can make a significant difference in preventing hazards.”

During the workshop, Officer Ariel Reyes delivered an in-depth presentation on crime mapping and various types of criminal activities, including auto theft, fraud, and break-ins. He provided attendees with practical tips on recognizing and reporting suspicious activities, securing their homes, and using technology to enhance personal safety. His session also covered strategies to prevent porch piracy and online scams, which have been on the rise in the region.

Deputy Fire Chief Chantalle Cosgrove followed with an engaging presentation on fire safety awareness and emergency preparedness. She outlined key fire prevention techniques, such as proper smoke alarm maintenance, home fire escape planning, and reducing fire hazards in residential areas. Additionally, she discussed how fire safety measures complement crime prevention efforts, reinforcing the importance of community vigilance.

Gian Paul, Chairperson of the Flower City Friends Club, praised the initiative, stating:

“Such workshops empower seniors and the broader community by providing essential information on safety and crime prevention. We appreciate Councillor Santos for organizing this impactful event.”

The workshop concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing attendees to voice their concerns and seek expert advice. Future initiatives are planned to continue fostering community education on safety and crime prevention.
