Record-Breaking Turnout at Earth Month Cleanup and Tree Planting Event in Brampton

Andrew McCandless Park was buzzing with environmental energy this past Sunday as more than 400 youth volunteers, families, and community leaders united for the third annual Earth Month Cleanup and Tree Planting event, led by Regional Councillor Rowena Santos and her Youth Council.

In just under an hour, volunteers collected 170 bags of litter, planted 150 trees and shrubs, and gathered over 500 lbs of electronic waste, turning the park into a model of green action and civic pride.

“I am so proud of our youth and community members who came out in full force,” said Councillor Rowena Santos, who also planted a Tamarack tree herself during the event. “What began as a small initiative three years ago has now grown into a city-wide movement. These incredible young leaders are showing us what real action looks like. It’s about more than just cleaning up—it’s about building habits that support a sustainable, healthy future for all.”

The event was a true collaboration, with participation from a range of organizations including:

  • City of Brampton Parks
  • Credit Valley Conservation (CVC)
  • Human Nature Project (HNP)
  • People Against Littering (PALs)
  • Let’s Get Together
  • Com2
  • Plant Based Treaty
  • Concord in the City
  • Region of Peel / OCWA

Bill Godfrey, founder of People Against Littering, praised the enthusiasm and growing commitment among Brampton residents. “The turnout was phenomenal. It’s deeply moving to see youth and families getting involved in hands-on environmental action. The fact that the first 75 volunteers were able to plant their own trees adds a powerful personal connection to the work we’re doing,” said Godfrey. “This is how we build lifelong stewards of our environment.”

Also present at the event was Gian Paul, President of the Flower City Friends Club (FCFC), who emphasized the power of unity. “Events like this remind us that real change happens when people come together with a shared purpose. Our seniors club is inspired by the youth leadership shown today and we’re proud to stand behind initiatives that bring generations together for the betterment of our city and our planet,” Paul said.

The event concluded with a community barbecue generously supported by the City of Brampton’s Parks Department, giving volunteers a well-deserved opportunity to relax, connect, and celebrate their impact.

This event, part of the City’s Imagine Your Impact Campaign, continues to grow each year—both in scale and influence—highlighting Brampton’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
