Ramadan 2025: Greater Toronto Area Welcomes the Holy Month with Community Events and Observances

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is preparing to observe Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, anticipated to commence on Friday, February 28, or Saturday, March 1, 2025, contingent upon the sighting of the moon. This sacred period is marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, reflection, and community engagement among Muslims worldwide.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, commemorating the initial revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. During this month, Muslims engage in fasting (sawm), one of the Five Pillars of Islam, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs during daylight hours to foster spiritual growth, self-discipline, and empathy for those less fortunate. The daily fast begins with a pre-dawn meal called suhoor and concludes with iftar, the meal eaten after sunset.

The GTA’s vibrant Muslim community has organized a variety of events to observe and celebrate Ramadan:

  • Ramadan Expo 2025: Scheduled from March 15 to 17 at The International Centre Hall #2 in Mississauga, this expo offers a comprehensive Ramadan shopping experience, matrimonial sessions, business workshops, a kids’ carnival, and an international halal food court. Tickets start at $5.
  • GTA Ramadan Festival – Ronaq-e-Ramadan: Taking place on March 15 and 16 at the Red Rose Convention Centre, this festival features entertainment, food, and cultural activities, providing an immersive Ramadan experience for attendees.
  • Islamic Institute of Toronto Programs: Beginning with the first Tarawih prayer on February 28, the institute will host educational and spiritual programs throughout Ramadan, including the “Resilient Hour” sessions before Maghrib prayers, Saturday lectures followed by community iftars, and youth nights every Friday.

Ramadan emphasizes community, charity, and spiritual reflection. Local mosques and organizations across the GTA will offer additional prayer services, Quranic recitations, and opportunities for communal iftars. Many will also coordinate charitable initiatives to support those in need, embodying the spirit of generosity that defines the month.

The conclusion of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, a festive holiday celebrating the end of fasting. In 2025, Eid al-Fitr is expected to occur on March 30 or 31, depending on lunar observations. The GTA will host various Eid celebrations, including special prayers, family gatherings, and community festivals.
