Ontario drivers heading toward Niagara should prepare for overnight delays as construction work on the QEW over the Burlington Skyway resumes. While there will be no lane closures during the long weekend itself, significant overnight restrictions are scheduled to start tonight.
Beginning at 11 p.m. on July 31 and continuing until 6 a.m. August 1, three Niagara-bound lanes on the QEW will be closed. Only two lanes will remain open during this period. In addition, both on-ramps to the QEW from Fairview Street (Niagara-bound) will also be closed. However, the Northshore Boulevard interchange will remain accessible.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), overseeing the project, says the overnight work is required to install an overhead sign support structure. This effort is part of a broader rehabilitation project to extend the life of the Burlington Skyway and enhance overall driving conditions.
Ongoing upgrades on the bridge include replacing concrete barrier walls, repairing and waterproofing the bridge deck, installing new lighting and signage, upgrading drainage, and repaving Niagara-bound lanes. The full project is expected to be completed by 2026.
